EDUC 5313 Week 1 Post

Hello everyone! My name is Max Maloney-Jacobs, and I currently work as an elementary music teacher for Pre-K through 5th grade students at a public school in Tulsa, OK. I am originally from Smithtown, NY (on Long Island), and my undergraduate degree is Interdisciplinary Studies in Music and Psychology from Molloy University. In working towards receiving my graduate degree in Curriculum & Instruction - Educational Technology, I first want to enhance the delivery and effectiveness of my instruction for my music students. Our school has a variety of education technology tools at our disposal; I want to ensure we are utilizing them to their fullest potential to elevate students in their educational journey. I would like to continue my career as an education professional by moving into a position where I am able to either guide the development of educational resources for schools/districts, or work within schools/districts supporting their development and implementation of Technology Integrations Plans.

Creative Communicator indicator 6b prompts students to create original works or responsibly repurpose or remix digital resources into new creations. I believe that this indicator can be paired with the Oklahoma Fine Arts standard 4.M.CR.1.1 by using audio samples or clips of existing songs to remix into a new, digital musical work. A great deal of the music consumed in our society in this point in time is digitally promoted and shared, and with the prominence streaming services and social media platforms such as Spotify, Bandcamp, Soundcloud, YouTube, and TikTok respectively, students have a plethora of music material to analysis and utilize in their own musical creation process. Using a program such as Bandlab, which has a portion of their site formatted specifically for music classrooms, students are able to engage with digital music loops, imported samples, and virtual instruments to generate original works. The rationale behind this lesson can be supported by part of the analysis of creativity in Gura (2016) in which creativity is partially defined as “...a natural reaction to life and works common needs”. Our lives and how we interact with each other and the world at large is widely digital, and utilizing the tools available to connect with fellow digital citizens is in our very drive as human beings, with our expression of the arts being an extension of that as well.

  1. Hi Max. I love how you have incorporated contemporary music into your classrooms. A lot of my students are artists, but do not take any music classes because they are so driven by choir and instrumental. Providing students with the resources that you state would encourage a lot my students to come to school. I love that you do this.
